Well I just figured something out. I have my fermenters in a large tub of water to keep the temp from fluctuating. I am using a 3 peace air lock, and the part that moves up and down just stays up at the top of the air lock. It still bubbles because I guess it builds up enough pressure to squeeze some out. If I apply slight pressure to the top of the bucket it bubbles and falls to the bottom of the air lock like it should. When I lift the Ale pale out of the tub of water the part that moves up and down falls to the bottom. So I assume the pressure of the out side water (tub water) is pushing on the side of the bucket. So if anyone is planning on doing the tub trick this summer I think you should wait and fill the air lock with water after you have put the fermenter in the tub of water. This will prevent you from what is happening to me. Mine should still be ok but it has to build up some pressure against the top of the air lock to bubble. Peace. (I hope this makes sense)

yup, a very simple concept that water imparts more pressure than the fluid air does. So when you have your fermenter in teh bucket of water, it "squeezes" the sides, and when you take it out, it "unsqueezes" the sides and fermenter tries to suck in air (or water from your airlock).

Or just dont worry aobut it and everything will be fine. You have the liquid seal which is what you want.

I read back what I said and it made no sense....yooper is somewhat right.....however I was just making an observation for other people. Excuse me for drinking and posting.

Formating ftw! But I understood. Actually never heard of the tub technique but I like the idea, and thanks for the advice.

It's ok- I've been guilty of PUI (posting under the influence) myself. I did actually try to figure out what you were talking about. :mug:
