well my first brew is a german ale kit from williams brewing co. I let it ferment for 17 days and bottled it today. I only used 3/4 of my priming sugur because I was not 110% sure it was ready due to a broken hydrometer. But its in bottles in my basement now. How long should I let this particular beer sit down there ? Will it clear up any as it sits? It is at about 70F and will stay close to that temp as long as the weather holds round here.

Warm and dark and it'll carb up nice in a couple weeks. A few weeks, and it'll taste even better. Yes, clarity will increase over time. Though I don't like Williams' since they won't tell me the ingredients I'm using, I've never had one of their kits not taste great.

So enjoy, and pop a bottle periodically to see how much time improves taste...

I usually let my finished beers sit in a warm, dark closet for about a month after bottling, but I've had beers that were pretty much 100% carbonated in 7-10 days. As for clearing, I've had batches that were crystal clear within two weeks, while others didn't clear at all, even after six months of lagering.
Either way, SouthernCross is right, try popping one now and then to test, and definitely try to save a couple for six months or more to see how they change over time.

Good luck!
