There are a lot of mixed results of you use other fruit than oranges. The special thing about adding a whole orange to a JAOM is the unique relationship of the bitterness of the pith in the peel of the orange and the overly sweet taste you get from adding so much honey and using a bread yeast which does not ferment it all.
So adding a different fruit results is a syrupy mead and may not be very drinkable. If you add other fruits on top of the orange then it often gets too sweet or the pith does not compliment the new fruit flavors.
So in my experience the flavors that blend well with JAOM have been lemon and any assortment of different spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cardamom and clove all do a good job.
So this is where a lot of newbees to the mead world start to stretch their legs and try different recipes using more traditional techniques.
You could try a traditional mead now and see how you like it.
Or go for a different melomel like strawberry or cherry.
To get an idea on recipes check out the recipe section here. Gotmead.com has a great section. Or I often just google "jack keller (insert flavor) wine. And swap out the sugar for honey in the recipe you find which often gives a good mead. But leave out any acid blend if found in those recipes as well. Or if you have more specific questions feel free to ask here.
