It's 6 degrees outside. My wort would cool off in record time without even using ice. Too bad both my primary and secondary are full!

Forecast in Houston is for snow today. I wasn't planning on brewing, but I think I'm gonna whip up a batch just so I can cool it in a snow bank. :D

Up here in NE we are supposed to get 6"-10" tomorrow. It is cold here, but not oppressively so. Good for brewing provided you maintain a constant consumption of carbonated antifreeze.

Hey Billybrew - Oklahoma state law does not allow homebrewing...(somebody better tell that to the LHBS in the state!)

Keeping it under the radar in Stillwater....

Really? Where did you read that? I don't have any info to the contrary, but I'd like to see where it says that. Yeah, my LHBS might be interested to hear that!

The LHBS won't care. They aren't breaking any laws, and they ARE making money. It would be you (the consumer that produces alcohol) that is the criminal. :D

Okla. Alcohol Beverage Act Title 37 allows home brew of "wine and cider". Beer is not listed. I have, in the past, sent an email to ABLE (Alc. Bev. Laws Enforcement commission) but never got a response....

(Walker's correct.)

Cooling it in a snow bank will actually be a slower way to cool it than just leaving it on a non-snow covered area. The snow acts as an insulator, and will actually prevent the heat from escaping out the sides.

Try shoveling an area off (say, a sidewalk) and just leaving it there to cool... will cool much quicker!

I sent off to ABLE for my wine and cider permit the other day cause I thought it would be cool to hang on the wall. Got it yesterday and its just a letterhead with a copied letter! UGH! I guess that's typical for Oklahoma.

Eddalex - seriously?

I can't imagine they'd ever pursue anyone, but you never know in this state - maybe you need to buy someone some office furniture (ala Carol whatshisname the former commissioner of insurance!)

There are a bunch of other ridiculous requirements in Art 37 - such as no signage allowed on liquor stores other than 18" high lettering saying "Package Liquor Sales" or something like that. Right!

A local HBS got shut down a few years ago.

They used to make the beer for customers.
The way they got round it (or thought they did) was to sell the ingredients plus charge a £5 service charge. They'd put the brew together but the customer had to pitch the yeast. When it was done the customer came in and bottled or the shop would charge a premium for bottles and bottling.

Customs and exsice shut them down after posing as a customer and rang them up to say they couldn't get in to pich the yeast could they please do it. After being handed the bottled beer they arrested them and shut them down. They aslo modelled the possible productiomt for the previous year and charged them the duty on the beer and the tax on the profit.

Carol Fisher, he who pissed off the mighty Gaylords.

Hey, what's up with all of the Okies showing up on the board all of the sudden? Welcome neighbors!

There is an operation called "Brew on Premises" popular in a couple of Canadian provinces and a number of American states. It is a retail operation where customers come in and brew their own beer using the store's equipment, then return a couple of weeks later and force carbonate and bottle. All with (usually) pretty high quality equipment. This business model is acceptable w/ BATF and (as always) state law may limit this business. In states I have lived in previously I have researched the state law and it seemed to be compliant (AZ, MD, MA - I cannot seem to get through the OK statute!)

Check out this link for a sample list of BOP's:
http://www.cask.com/main/index.php?page_id=10#3

This link is a BOP and describes the process (or Google "Brew on Premise"):

You'd need about $250K to start it up, but the margins are enormous! I've done a business model a couple of times, although it hasn't been updated recently - if anyone's interested in the model, let me know.

Wow, all these Okies in one thread. Welcome to the board.

I'm from Tulsa, and will be moving back to OKC next year. Isn't there a good sized clubk in OK called FOAM, or something like that? Silly laws don't seem to slow them down. :)

Ha! Good 'ole Customs and Excise! "We're shutting you down, then we're gonna kick you in the gonads!" :)

Yeah, they're the Tulsa club, there's also one in OKC called the High Plains Draughters.

Let me know when you get here, I can probably get away for a beer some evening.

Haha! High Plains Draughters! I like it. I love that film, Clint Eastwood is the best! My favorite is a toss-up between "Unforgiven" and "The Outlaw Josey Wales" :D

I went looking for Clint in Carmel, CA one time when I was travelling over there. Didn't find him :( And didn't think much of Carmel! When I was driving out of the town, I passed Malpaso Drive, and I bet he lives at the top of that road. Never did go to check it out....I'm not the stalking type! ;)

One persons stalking is another's admiration.
