So, I decided to finally try cyser. I bought honey and apple juice and yeast months ago, and never got around to making it because I couldn't find a recipe that I felt I was confident enough in, nor that I was confident enough in my self to make it happen.

So today, I used 4 gallons of motts apple juice, 5 lbs of honey, and Nottingham yeast. We shall see what happens. It can't be worse than my last cider attempt...

Haha, have an awesome night!

Hope you used some yeast nutrient...

How did you screw up a cider? Not trying to be a d1ck. +1 on the nutrient.

Life got busy, I didn't rack it, and it picked up lots of odd flavors. And not very good at all.

This will be my second brew ever. No nutrient, I didn't think about it, I just figured I would see what happens. Kinda on a live and learn page lately.

Without yeast nutrient it will very likely be another failure. Honey is deficient in the nutrients yeast need.

Also, question. Why is it that no recipes that I could quickly find by search on this forum include a yeast nutrient? Is it because some have corn sugar, and that can better sustain yeast? If so, how much would it take to work with the yeast?

The addition of yeast nutrient may have been assumed in those recipes.

Even a 100% juice cider benefits from nutrient. I personally add a Tsp per gallon...but would think a bit more necessary for the amount of honey you added.

EDIT: Tsp per gallon is actually probably fine for your recipe.

I kegged a 5 gallon batch of apfelwein a couple of days ago, never moved it off the lees it has sat on for 9 months, delicious! No nutrient, mead needs it.

Whereas I'd suggest "combined" nutrient a.k.a. energiser. As it has some DAP but also yeast hulls and other micro-nutrients etc. FermaidK would be good.

You can still get sulphrous stink from just DAP addition........

Adding tonight will not hurt. I usually space my nutrient additions into 3 steps over a 3 day period. So lets say you go 4 tsp total. Put in two tonight and 1 every 24 hours for 48 hours. That is my general practice. Others may vary.

did any of those other recipes you found have raisins in them? Im new to this as well but I've read that is the reason for raisins...they act as a nutrient

Yeah, it wasnt until i already mixed the batch did I start seeing raisins. I'm thinking about starting a gallon batch of JAOM, joes ancient orange mead, which has raisins in it.
