Dear forum, I've been pressing this site about a month now finding suggestions and tips and now I have a question. Last night some hops got into my blow off tube and popped my top (lesson learned, if dry hopping use a bag!) so the question is. What sort of contamination am I looking at. Probably popped for two hours and the mess is delightful. Should I spoon off the top krausen or what?

I'd guess no contamination at all. If fermentation is going that strong, I don't think you have much to worry about. There will be a lot of CO2 outgassing to deter airborne critters from landing in your brew.

You dry hopped actively fermenting beer? Well, that is mistake #1. Next time, wait until fermentation has completed. You likely drove off most of the aroma that you were trying to get out of the hops.

Just put an airlock or blow tube back on and don't worry about it. Don't remove anything from the bucket. Your beer should be fine.

this happened to me twice and I had no contamination I just put the airlock back on. During fermentation C02 is being pushed out continuously so besides the mess its aprox 90% non contaminated.

Ah thank you very much. It was my first attempt at dry hopping and yeah i see the error in that now. That's what I get for late night brewing :) I think I'll try the dry hopping when it gets to my secondary. For now I have lovely Irish stout carpet.

Aeniph...how's the skiing at Snowbasin this year? Love that place!:off:

I haven't had a chance to go this year. Kids and hospitals and work etc. But I hope to get some good hiking in :)

RDWHAHB. Not much you can do now but hook up a blowoff tube and hope for the best; I think you will be fine.

Also, post a pic of the mess!

Should have dry hopped at week 3 in the primary. Bottle at week 4, right from the primary. No real need to rack to secondary...

Wish I had taken a picture when it happened but was kinda panicked a little. I really should have left the dry hops till the last week but I had to rack it to secondary. I have one carboy that I like to use for primaries and I started a second batch on Monday. Should just leave my hops to boiling :)
