My NB Caribou Slobber extract is 12 days into a 2 week primary. A couple days ago, I was trying to impress my wife with my my wares...of course, all she had to say when she saw it was "Eww!", but I digress.

After she was done commenting, I decided to take a pic just for my records and this is what it looked like:

When I checked on it this morning, this is what it looked like:

Is this just some yeast activity that was slow to the party or something else? If it's something else, what could it be? As this is my first batch of Homebrew ever, I'm curious about all the oddities that take place and what causes them.

Thanks for any input.

Sorry, both pics WERE the same...darn you, photobucket copy!

I've finally gotten the correct 2nd image in there.

looks like you got yourself some beer there :mug:

resembles krausen, but having never brewed a brown, can't comment on the color

That's completely normal. The lil bits on top are krausen foam leftovers & lil bits of yeast floaters. That crud ring around the surface is from when the krausen receeds back into the beer. No worries,it's fine.

Looks like bubbles to me, probably co2 escaping the beer. Nothing wrong with either pic!

Thanks, guys. Yeah, I knew the crud ring was from the krausen. I was more worried about the foam coming back in the 2nd pic, as it had all dissipated a couple days before.

Hard to tell from your photo (I think you posted the same photo twice.) Are you referring to the round white blotches floating on top of the carboy?

When fermentation calms and the yeast and kreusen settle back down to the bottom of the fermenter, a pretty yucky crust is left stuck to the walls of the vessel which is normal. Fermentation will still continue. At this point, the yeast settled on the bottom of the carboy will release tiny co2 bubbles. The bubbles will surface and join with others in small round patches. Search homebrewtalk and you will find quite a few people posting similar pictures asking if their beer is infected. Could it be infected? Sure but if you were cautious about sanitation, more than likely they are co2 bubbles.

If your beer develops a "skin" or what is called a pellicle, like the picture I've attached of an Oud Bruin fermented with Brett, lacto, pedio etc. (intentionally infected) than I'm afraid you have an infection. Note however that not all infections will look like this. Some infections won't be noticeable until after you have bottled.
