I am making my first ginger bug and I’m about 5 days in. When I checked it today I noticed a tiny green spot of mold, which I removed before taking this picture, and this white stuff on top. I read that this white stuff on top with the floating ginger is probably yeast but since I’m new to this I wanted to ask all of you. Due to the little green speck should I just toss and restart? It’s been in a cabinet under my bar covered in cheese cloth, but I read that this isn’t a great cover so I am going to drill into a canning lid and stick an air lock in it as it’s cover moving forward.

Yes, you should dispose of it because of the mold.

The white film is called a pellicle.

Ok that’s what I figured I’d have to do. Moving forward if there is no mold the pellicle is ok right? Thank you for the response!
