The instructions state I should put into a secondary, but it's an irish stout. Is it really necessary? If it will help the beer, I'll do it, if not, I'll just bottle.

Seems to be no sense in trying to clear an already dark stout, but need help as a rookie. tks

It should clear just fine in the primary. Most people only use primary vessels and only secondary when dry hopping or adding fruit. I would leave it in the primary since it will be safer in there and one less transfer (one less chance for infection).

Just make sure before you bottle you still take gravity readings three days apart to make sure fermentation is done. Once the gravity is stabile your good to bottle!

the answer is almost certainly "not necessary". i'm assuming here that you aren't going to age on oak, or fruit, etc.

what's the OG? if it's a big beer, some might prefer to bulk age - but that is a preference, not a requirement.

Agreed. Secondary is not necessarily needed for most beers.
I still do it, but only if I'm doing a big beer that I want to bulk age..

I always go secondary...im finding i have a lot less sediment. i dont cold crash so i dunno..works for me.
