Am I too late to get the hops planted this year? I'm not expecting a harvest, but it would be nice to let them grow and spread their roots out so I can get a harvest next year. I live in Iowa, right now its hot and very humid and it will be that way the rest of the summer. Would I be better off waiting and planting next spring?

I really do not know the answer to this question either, however I live in Oklahoma and finally planted mine last week. The sad thing is I had them in march and just never got around to planting them. I don't see why they would not sprout and at least grow alittle giving you a better harvest in about 18 months.

I planted some of mine in late May last year. Temps were already over 100. Two sprouted w/in 24 hours. They did struggle a bit with the heat though. I believe I shaded a few of them with old window screens propped up on the ground. Now this year I've got really strong plants growing very well.

Planted a Hallertau on Father's Day two years ago. She came up fine and gave me a small harvest last year. If you can get your hands on a rhizome and want to grow you should have no problems.

Even if it's too late to get a good harvest this year, they'll get their roots well established and you'll have a bigger harvest next year than you would if you waited until next spring to plant them.
