I want to give a try making up my own recipe or using a base recipe and adding to it and so on. Does it make any sense to pick out a recipe and for my instance want to add some sort of fruit to it and maybe more grains/extract and play around a bit any info would be greatly appreciated. Also at what time in the brew process should fruits, honey, chocolate, etc. be added during the boil or in primary or secondary fermentation.

I would take a known recipe and only change one ingredient at a time.

Fruit is usually added in secondary so you don't scrub out the aromas of the fruit with the heavy ferment of the primary.

Chocolate and spices can be added at flame out / end of boil. Honey can be added at flame out or secondary.

Don't change too many parts of the recipe each batch so you will know what part of the process you like or don't like.
