Can you guys tell the difference between Pissenlit and straight Saison? To me, it tastes note-for-note identical (which is not a bad thing, mind!). Curious if I'm missing something.
i feel like pissenlit is in a league of its own as far as tomes go...extremely unique but one of the most complex fantome beers i've had. even one of my favorite beers easily. saison is always awesome but i don't think it comes close to pissenlit imo

So this was....interesting. Smelled and tasted like Heineken. Very, very sweet, too.

Value / taste question. How are 1990's Fantomes drinking? Who's tried em? I ask because someone contacted me who is willing to trade some of his old 'Tomes:

Saison 1992
Hiver 93-94
Pissenlit 1997
Caeymaex
La Pellainoise
(these last two he's not sure if he'd part with).

SOOO... I'm curious what is fair to offer for them. He wants something like DBH+ or Blabaer+ for each one.

Any input is appreciated.

'Tome freak's response: "He should be ashamed of himself for trying to pawn off those beers on you. In fact, you should give me his contact info so I can reach out him and give him a good talking to about his behavior!"

Every one is perfect...

Real answer is, they are all over the place. Fantome bottle variation? No way. I've had quite a few, they have ranged from oxidized messes to unbelievably lively with no sign of age. More the former than the later. It's a really great experience to have, but no guarantees.

Man...you are just having all sorts of good fortune finding these long lost tome treasures.

As far as "value" goes. Who the hell knows? That all lies in the holder and what the person who desires it is willing to give up. I can only speak for myself when I say that when it comes to old tomes like this, all my cards are on the table. Im willing to trade anything I have to acquire old tomes because they are pretty much my favorite thing. Not everyone shares this mentality but I know of at least a couple other people who "go all in" to get old tomes like these.

Taste wise, you need to understand that you are dealing with saisons that are ~20 years old. Think about that... Fantome variation aside, these are 20 year old beers. Even with perfect cellaring conditions these bottles have had ample time to suffer from packaging failure.

I say all this to temper your expectations if you are in it to drink em. From my standpoint, even when the bottles are "duds" they are still very unique and interesting experiences. But every once in awhile one of these ends up being incredible and exceeds all expectations.

Perfect reply.

As funny as it might seem on the surface, if I had things like DBH and Blabs I would trade them. Both of those pale in comparison rarity wise to any of the old Fantomes he listed. Taste wise, euh thats a different story... but when has taste ever meant anything in trade/valuation. ;)

To see this list of beers and then the things wanted in return makes me scratch my head... and yeah I agree. ISO them all.

Its been 3 years since ive had Caeymaex. In that time ive known of 3-4 other bottles. When I opened mine, I vowed to do anything to get another. It encompassed everything I love about Fantome and displayed the most vibrant house brett character that you can detect in varying levels in other bottles both new and old.

I swear someone in Soy is planting old moldly tome corks in a garden and every couple of years, around spring time a single bottle of Caeymaex breaks the surface.

If you decide not to deal with them, I'd love a crack at them...

Question:

Any way to tell if Clos Preal is b1 or b2, if the (black or gold) foil is missing from the bottle? Mine is labeled batch b11. Not sure if that is any indication.

Follow up: any knowledgeable folks can tell me what to expect from this lot b11 batch of Clos Preal? Is it b1 or b2?

I hate to be the bringer of bad news but I believe lot b11 bbef 2016 is the same label used for both bottlings. I can with 100% certainty tell you it was used with the gold foil as im looking at a bottle of it right now. If necessary I can pull out a black foil one to snap a side by side pic but im fairly certain the only thing differentiating them (other than the liquid inside) was the gold vs black foil.

Ive drank them both several times and greatly preferred the black foil for its slightly more tart/citrus character. The gold foil had much more dominant alcohol, pepper and clean yeastiness. Though, the last couple times I had the gold foil b2, it was really developing into something nice.

Regardless of which version you have, its good stuff.

Just quaffed a 2005 Ete. Fascinating. Still tasted super fresh - woulda been fun to see what even more age would've done to this.

Tasted exactly like someone had melted a Orange creamsicle, into a gin & tonic. Looked about like that too -- cloudy pale orange. Hints of juniper, mint, lime, vanilla, orange. Very citrusy. Tart. Very strange - I've never had anything like it - and absolutely delicious.

Enjoyed with two friends who are ambivalent about Fantome (still have found nobody in Central Florida who shares my enjoyment). One said it was the strangest tasting beer ever they had, but both thoroughly enjoyed it. Very glad to have had an opportunity to taste - and share - this one.
