Is Black Barley the same as Black Patent Malt?

So last time I was at my LHBS My stout recipe called for black barely and they gave me black patent malt. I just let it ride as I figured they knew better than me, but I thought these were different. Whats the deal?

I believe black patent is more common in porters rather than stouts.
