I'm picking up a used 4912 tomorrow to convert into a two kegger. I'm wondering if a temp controller is necessary like when using a freezer.
Do you guys use the internal t-stat, or external?

I don't use a one and don't think it's neccessary. I placed a cup of water in the fridge on the first day and measured the temp, it was 40F, so I left it at that.

You dont need one. I will caution you though, if you crank it up to max you will get frozen beer. I keep minie just below the 5 setting and it works great.

At some point I will be adding one to mine. It is a fine line between keeping my beer at 45deg and it being frozen.

Nothing more disappointing that going to pull a pint and nothing coming out. Well I guess opening the door to find that 5gals of beer leaked out of a poppit would be worse, but that is about it.
