Hey all.... here are two IPA recipes I am looking at for this Saturday. Any thoughts on them would be real helpful! Hosting an event at a Nursing home environment so was looking for a recipe that would give in to a lot of the senses:) I'm doing AG and I believe that a simple infusion would be appropriate for either one. Would this be right? I am also going to do batch so I'll probably toss another pound of 2 row in it to compensate for the loss in efficiency. I am also thinking of trying that Ph 5.2.

For an IPA, I would go more towards the simpler first recipe b/c there is more emphasis on the hops vs. the biscuit-y grain flavors. I would also go a bit higher with the IBUs, maybe an extra .5-1 oz goldings for the 60 min, and the same in cascades around 0-5 min. That's just me though.

The old folks will love whatever you brew I'm sure ;)

With the Thunder recipe I'm Trying to figure out if the batch sparge number make sense. It uses 12.15 pounds of grain. At 1 quart/pound I'm adding 3.04 gallons to the mash in. 3.64 gallons in the mash out. My first runnings are 6.7 gallons. Boil is about 6.2 gallons so it sounds like I dont need to do a second running. The OG should be 1.061.

But like I said... not sure if it makes sense. What do you all think?

I think the oak in the first recipe will overwhelm the fairly modest (by IPA standards) hops presence. I'd nix the oak and make it a subtle beer, or up the hops quite a bit, both bittering and flavor.

The first one looks like the better recipe. I'd up the hops a bit and like the Baron said, reduce the character grains a touch - you want this to be an easy drinking beer. The second recipe looks like it's trying to do too much with all those grains, it will get muddy.
