I've been doing 2 gallon BIAB for a few years now and have it pretty well down pat. A friend wanted to do my German IPA and make a 5 gallon batch. Well....
Used BeerSmith to recalculate and we began last night.
14.5 lbs of grain (Munich) in 2 five gallon paint bags set in a 15 gal pot w/about 8 gallons of water. The only problem and reason we went w/2 bags is my other friend who supplied the boil pot has a thermometer built in and it's sticks deep into the pot so we sort of hung the bags on either side of it.
The bags were tied closed and hung so not to touch the bottom of the pot and thus we didn't get to mix the grain/water mix every so often. What we did was dunk it tea bag style a few time in the 75 min mash.
We came out of the mash a little low, but figuered we had extra water so the boil should fix the SG.
Well we did a 75 min boil and were still a abit low and were down to about 4.5 gallons into the fermenter.
No big thing as long as we make beer.If I do another 5 gallon batch I will have learned something....
Anywho....I took the grain home and figuring there was sugar still in it I began to take some out and place it in the paint strainer shown below and poured 200* water thru it s lowly. then I'd dump the grain and replace and do it again.

Well the first bag produced about 3.5 gallons w/a SG of say 1.015
Not bad I thought as I planned to boil it down along w/what came out of the second bag.
The second bag also produced 3.5 gallons but the SG was low only 1.008. Funny how this bag mashed much better than the first.
So now I''m gonna boil and mix the two batched down to about 2.6 gallons and add some hops and see what I come up with.
