is there anything that can tell me what i can make with ingredients on hand?, we always end up with a little of this and that. would be a cool way to try new brews

That exact feature is available Beer Alchemy (for Mac only).

I'm not aware of it being available in any other applications at the moment.

well my MAC search is a flop.
any chance i can give you a list and you can punch it in for me.

I'm an ex Chief linebacker btw

Sure. Shoot me a PM with the list. I've never used this feature, so this will be a good way to give it a test run.

Apparently this can be done with BeerSmith..

Ever wonder what you can brew using ingredients you already have on hand?

BeerSmith 1.3 can help you find the answer!

- Go to any folder of recipes - then open the "Find" command on the "Edit" menu.

http://www.beersmith.com/recipe_search.htm

- Click on the "Add all items in inventory" button which will add all of the items you have in your inventory to the ingredient list.

- Click on "Match recipes using ONLY these ingredients"

If you find no matches, you can increase the number in "Allow XX Unmatched Ingredients" box to make it easier to find close matches.

Now you will have a list of recipes from your current folder can be made with the ingredients you have on hand!

Cheers!
Brad

Yeah, I had 3 messages and it's full. :D

I'll punch it in when I get home. But honestly, there are only a few (balanced) ways to go with that list of ingredients.

I just made some guesses about amounts and got the following, which coincidentally meets all the numerical requirements for an American Amber Ale (used BrewTarget for the calculations):

Leftovers - American Amber Ale
==========================================================
Batch Size: 5.100 gal
Boil Size: 6.100 gal
Boil Time: 1.000 hr
Efficiency: 70%
OG: 1.050
FG: 1.013
ABV: 4.9%
Bitterness: 28.9 IBUs (Tinseth)
Color: 11 SRM (Morey)

Fermentables
==========================================================
8.0 lb - Munich Malt
1.0 lb - Wheat Malt
9.0 oz - Crystal Malt - 40L
6.0 oz - Rye Malt

Total grain: 9.937 lb

Hops
==========================================================
Cascade 6.0% 1.0 oz 60 min
Cascade 6.0% 1.0 oz 10 min

Yeast
==========================================================
Safale US-05

I use this feature in BeerAlchemy. Most of the time I let it choose what I brew next. With the click of one button the inventory is checked against the recipe database and then listed out for recipes ready to go down to the recipes requiring 4 or less additional items which helps plan my shopping.
