So I have a pumpkin recipe that I'm going to try out tomorrow. This will be my first brew. I have a quick question. It calls for 30oz of canned pumpkin. I picked up a can of Easy Pumpkin pie mix. Will that work?

Also, I was suggested to bake the mix then add to a muslin bag and boil in wort. I can just uncan this pumpkin mix, throw it on a sheet pan, and just bake it correct?

I used the Pumpkin pie mix. Just realize it has some spice already in it, so you may want to adjust the spices you add.

I didn't bake it, so can't comment there. I just threw it in the fermenter after initial fermentation was over. (it should be fairly sanitized already)

I wouldn't use the pumpkin pie mix, it has added sugar and spices in it. Usually people use 100% pure pumpkin puree. look at the ingredients, it should only list pumpkin.

I baked my puree on a sheetpan and then threw it right in the boil, it all settled out in the fermenter.

that's my $0.02, hope it helps!

Sounds to me like it's already going to have some spices in the mix, which isn't a problem, just make sure you don't over spice by adding tons of your own spice in addition.

Check the ingredients and make sure it doesn't have any preservatives, or it may cause you fermentation problems.

Libby's Easy Pumpkin Pie Mix. Ingredients are: Pumpkin, sugar syrup, water, natural flavors, salt, and spices. Would that be OK? I'll see if I can find some puree some where. If I can't, how much spice would you recommend?
