I made Yoopers rhubarb wine. Just transferring to secondary now. First time I have opened and looked at the wine. Has a weird oil on top. I followed here recipe to a tee. Any ideas what this is. I used raisins not white grape concentrate. Also taste very very harsh right now but know that will settle out over time but this oil worries me. Another update. This stuff is definitely acting like oil. I am washing everything up and filled the fermentor with hot water and it all came to the top and floated. Looks like a yellowish oil slick. Almost like cooking oil. Is this from the raisins or what's going on here.

Took a look at this thread then searched images of film yeast in wine and it definitely doesn't look like this. The film yeast almost looks like yeast and not that clear. This literally looks like I took cooking oil and dumped a TBS into it. Exact same color. When I washed it it literally floated to the top and went like oil on water would. I wouldn't expect yeast to do this. It did it within 30 seconds of adding water.

What ingredients were listed with the raisins? Could they have been coated in oil?

Son of a b*tch. I just checked the ingredients and there is sunflower oil in them. I wish I would have checked that first. I just assumed they were raisins. They were the walmart brand raisins. Well at least I know its not an infection now. Now I just need to hope that doesn't affect the flavor.

Just use paper towel to absorb the oil. Just lay towel flat on top for a couple of seconds and it will pick it up. I do this with meat broth to remove oil on top of it. Hope this helps.

I've never dealt with this, but my suggestion would be to leave it alone until it's done fermenting, and then rack it and chill it to harden the oils so you can just scoop them off. Good luck.

I would never toss it. Like I said it taste good other then a little harshness. I'm just going to rack it a few times. After all oil floats. I racked it from primary and a lot of it is already gone. Going to rack a few more times and hopefully it's all gone by the time a bottle.
