So as of now I brew extract I just stepped up to full boils and the small chiller (20 ft 3/8 in) just isnt doing the job. I am thinking about getting a 50ft 1/2" off amazon the best price I have found is just under $100. Eventually I wouldn't mind building a counterflow but I don't have the pots to make that worthwhile at the moment.

Is it right to assume I could just use the immersion chiller tube to build the counterflow down the road?

The tough party will be straighten out the core without crimping it. I would keep it or sell it. You could use it add a prechiller in the summer time if your hose water is to warm.

I would recommend doing 25-30ft of 3/8 for the inner tubing. I have tried both the 1/2 and the 3/8, and the bigger just doesn't have enough surface area. I confess I didn't use 50ft, but it is kind of hard to get the last bit out when the kettle is empty, and you might not like how much you leave behind. And to your other question, yes you can roll it back out. The more you work copper the stiffer it gets though. Better eat your wheaties.
