Meh, Kathy Griffin's a loser just trying to get attention. It's one thing to be an atheist making that comment, but her reply for making the comment was: "Am I the only Catholic left with a sense of humor?'' Telling the God of the religion you belong to that He had nothing to do with your success and that He can "suck it" seems pretty retarded.

I wonder if she's actually a practicing catholic, or just identifies herself as such like many jews do, as a part of a race or culture but not practicing the religion. And yeah, I'm sure that she identified herself as a catholic just to deflect criticism. We all remember the Seinfeld episode where Tim Whatley converted to judaism simply so that he could tell jewish jokes with impunity. In other words, I'd bet that after Griffin caught all the flak for her statement, she identified herself as a catholic because we all think that it's more acceptable to make for of a group if you're part of that group, because it's like laughing at yourself.

Yeah, practicing Catholics wouldn't make statements like that. It's still weird though to make such anti religious statements and then try to justify it by saying its ok because you are a part of that religion.

We're on the verge of creating a "what's your religion" poll here and I think it's just dangerous territory. We don't need to be any more devicive than we already about our brewing dogmas like batch vs fly sparging. It would probably be best to close this thing IMHO.

I'll agree that this thread has the potential to get ugly, but isn't that kind of the purpose of the OT section, to discuss things not related to beer?

It's not just off topic for homebrewing, it's one of those topics that will get people all kinds of pissed off. I'd rather not get into a religion debate with some folks who I'd otherwise love talking beer with.

Just as an example, I had lunch with one of my clients that launched into a ridiculous rant about his religious views and in relationship to drinking and divource (another client had mentioned he had an ex wife and I had mentioned homebrewing). Needless to say, we were both offended and the business relationship has been stressed for a while now.

This is what I understand about this thread:

When people thank a higher power of their choice, a normed expectation is that this is supposed to be an act of humilty. Humility is a desied characteristic in every religion that I can think of. When people do this in a percieved boastful or self centered way, it really bothers people because it is seen as the antithisis of humility.

That seems to be the interpretation of the case when celebreties and others in the public eye take a humble act and perform it in an ostentatious manner.

Public figures are boastful and ostentatious by design. Praising a higher power often makes their actions seem less genuine and self-serving.

There is an appeal here and a comfort on this board.

It's so natural for us to hit this site and vent, pop-off, or just be a little outrageous because for the most part, we're all helpful and supportive and we like a tremendous amounts of the same things.

But we have differences as well and so we have to be careful and exercise discretion as we would if we were face-to-face.

Some of the posts here are beginning to be devisive in nature and not careful.
To wit:
If you believe x you are a (an) y.

Where y is an ass, idiot, etc.

We see this a great deal more often with religion, politics, and sometimes with sparge techniques (go figure). I've also seen some coded race comments specifically when it comes to immigration.

Do I have rants on this board that fit this divisive criteria? Most certainly so. I havent recieved any complaints, but I probably have run the risk of being ignored by someone that has the McMaster Carr part# I need, might have been willing to meet me for a beer during a business trip, consoled me during a stuck sparge or if something personally tragic should befall me.

Is this actionable in terms of closing this thread. I've not been doing this long enough to act without conferring with my peers and the board admin.

Why let it come to that?

You know, I'm not sure this discussion has much further to go. Personally, I hate discussions about religion. I have my own thoughts, but there's no need for me to share them. If someone disagrees with me, I can live with that, it doesn't impacy my life.

And, if people DO want to have a civilized discussion about religion, doing so in the middle of a Kathy Griffin thread seems... wrong.

So, closed before any harm is done.
