Ah shoot. I find myself posting again. It bothers me a little when I write long posts and hog this thread. I don't even know if anybody reads much of what I write down or just thinks "there goes Dan again on some ramble". I'm me, this thread is a release. I took off work today. We've been working 65 hour work weeks for the past 3 weeks. When I was younger that wasn't a big deal but man I get worn out these days with that schedule.

So I called in today. Not coming to work. I feel a little bad about that but not too much. I need money to live, I have tons of bills and two mortgages on two houses. But lately all I do is work my ass off to keep up.

Today is a mental health day for me. I am using the 12 hours I would be at work do stuff for me. I m going to have conversations with my kids, light the grill and cook hamburgers, yes hamburgers. I have a broken clothes dryer that causes all kinds of inconvenience - fixing that today or at minimum troubleshooting down to the defective part. I haven't dug into it yet but pretty sure I know the broken link. I just have to prove it.

Cheers to you all!
Dan

I read your whole rant, I as a fedex guy worked 70 hour weeks at christmas for 6 weeks and know all to well what you mean. Were now back to regular hours which means 7-7 every day. Idk why im up, i also dont know why im on this thread, but if it makes you feel any better I feel for you... Also im a quote young guy at 26 but i feel like im 56.

G'morning guys. Been a while since I've had a chance to post. I'm finally finishing up with my move. Good Lord at the mess they left me, but I'm in my new place now and almost completely unpacked.

I slept in my own bed for the first time a cpl nights ago since the move started almost a month ago. Dang did it not feel nice to sink back into that badboy again.

The house which is 46 years old does not come without it's own set of problems, but I hope these can be worked out without too much work. I have a few leaky pipes, and holes to seal up in the basement to try to reduce rodent problems. The basement will require some attention to start trying to stop some leaks. Not much we can do about these till the ground allows some excavators in without marring up. The wiring is downright horrid down there! Seems there was no wiring code back in 1970. I'll be ripping out quite a bit of old plugs and light sets that looked like they were spliced in to whatever nearby wire was near. I would rather just take it all out and rewire it myself with fresh wire and fixtures to sleep a bit better.

The poor ATT phone tech worked almost 6 hours in the rain yesterday installing about 300' of cable to the house. The install allowed 3-4 new wires to be ran so I was able to get broadband and a landline installed yesterday. Phone in every room! Considering the shape of the wires, this was a feat in itself. The good side of this so far is, I have a new roof, 15 new windows and new real hardwood flooring.

I worked Monday night, stayed up all day yesterday while he was there and now about to wrap up my last shift at work for a few days. I last seen the bed at 3PM Monday and I'm feeling it now. Grrrr

Now that I'm nearing the end of unpacking, I hope to start tackling the cleaning. The old owners left me with enough trash and discarded items that it'll probably take about 3 trips to the landfill to haul off. On the positive side of that, for all you old timers out there, I did run across a Kodak Instamatic 8mm camera. While I never used one of these, I did have my fair share of coping off several hundred yards of film to VHS growing up.

Hope to get started brewing again maybe by the middle of February. I could do so now at anytime, but honestly I just got so much of a mess to contend with, I'de rather wait till I could do so in a nice clean area and know my chore list was - at least smaller. lol Now that I have internet at home, hope to get back on the HBT to catch up.

Later guys,

Ken

Glad to hear you are no longer sleeping in a trailer!

Does anyone here keep bees or can you guys shed some light on beekeeping?
I found a local course being offered but just barely missed the registration deadline for this year.

Dont know much about bees, but here is some information on the anatomy of a wasp.

Sorry, couldn't help myself. My dad kept bees for a while (hobbyist not professionally) when I was a kid until they disappeared. You can raise them most anywhere. What kind of information do you need?

Sorry to be a downer but I just need to vent this off. I was let go from my job today. No explanation as to why and Nebraska is a right to work state so they didn't have to tell me why. Never been fired before and it's pretty depressing. I've got enough savings to last a while but I've never been in this situation. Thanks for letting me vent.

Had that happen to me about 7 years ago. I'm still a little bitter about it. I know some of the reason for it on my part but it doesn't make it any better. It's great to hear you have savings enough that you can get by (I was in the same boat) and it ended up being a blessing. Hang in there. You will find something better.

4th times a charm?

Looking for pros n cons of hive setups. I'm sure like brewing there's a thousand ways to do it. Would prefer to keep it as simple as possible. Also what equipment is necessary and what isn't? After accounting for bees I don't have much of a budget. It seems from some quick half assed searches equipment costs could add up quickly.

Few years back I knew a guy that had made a hive out of a plastic barrel but that was as far as he got. He never had any bees in it.

sfgoat, truly sorry to hear of your job loss. Good that you have savings and your old job should have been paying unemployment insurance. Take it, no shame, but it is a shame they let you go and gave no reason - lawful but not right

I am looking forward to spending some more time with my family. I might try to get back to my roots a little and do some handyman work on the side. Surprisingly my wife was happy about this. I guess I've been stressed and it was affecting my family life so perhaps it is a blessing. Time will tell.

Plus, maybe now my hair will stop falling out. I've lost quite a bit of it in the last year.

It's easy to stress on stuff like this, but believe me one day you'll look back and laugh. The only thing that is important is the family, and their welfare is mostly dependent on your time with them, and your attitude, and not the brand of their clothes or the type of car you drive. I think we impose expectations on ourselves that we get from TV, or our neighbors, who knows where. If we can't meet those lofty goals, we berate ourselves, stress rises, everybody under the roof is affected. It doesn't have to be that way. It's completely up to you.

I could not have said it better. My wife had the same thing happen to her. 13 years and just let go with no explanation. Her performance reviews ware always great. They just ended up hiring a much younger person for half the money. Sucks. She was devastated for a while but has re-inventerd herself and is under a lot less stress. Yes, she makes less money but is so much happier. A good trade off in my book.

What we had was kind of crate style. Basically a box, that you could stack more on top and each was set up kind of like a filing cabnet (you have comb blanks within a frame which you hang in the boxes like folders in a filing cabnet. Otherwise you need the bare minimum. Something to keep from getting stung (rig it up however you want) and maybe a smoke delivery device. The bees are the biggest part. Was kinda funny when we got them, had to pick them up at the post office because the carrier refused to deliver them.

That is the right attitude. Roll with the punches and don't stress yourself overmuch. Hopefully this turns out to be a blessing in disguise.

Hi all

I still haven't brewed since moving to Hawaii and inthe many months leading to the move had no time.

My brewery was mostly perfected and my brew stand was the Rock of Gibraltar before I moved...well it wasn't perfect but was very usable and left a small footprint.

I sold most all of it before the move so I didn't have to ship and nearly all the rest later for cash when I was jobless In Hawaii. Woes me [emoji1]

Now I have all the brewing goodies but some pumps and associated hardware. Also, to me it's a big deal - No fermentation chamber. I know about swamp cooling. I'm to dam spoiled to use one. Just being honest. But I am not as spoiled as I am in earnest to brew.

I've rebuilt for the most part, have everything needed except the couple things mentioned above.

Even put together, Harley Davidson kegerator No 3. . Only puts out soda water, which I think I'll always keep on tap - very refreshing at the start and end of the day

Here' a picture. I haven't taken it yet. Hopefully turns out

Oops, wait. I thought there was a picture option.

It's far from the man-cave brew house feel of the other place I lived, but at least it's twice as big. One chore day closer to brewing. At this point, I'm ready to get back in the game. Maybe by my next off weekend, I'll be able to lite the fire. I really miss the old garage which was covered in reclaimed barnwood.

I have a wireless Direct TV receiver that I plan to use out here, so maybe that'll spuce it up a bit. Also have easy access to a new hot water heater in the basement that I plan on plumbing out here so that will help some. Unlike the other place, this is a attached garage so I have easy access to the house and bathrooms.

I think my next spring time project will be to put a fresh coat of epoxy on the floor, but then I'll have to baby it to keep from marring it up. I'll have to sleep on it a while. But at least I'm making progress.

Hey the new place is an open canvas. I sometimes think brewing is just an excuse to build stuff, experiment, it actually, I believe expands horizons [emoji3]

Nice sized space. It would become a wood shop for me.
