i havent read any of the responses on this thread. That being said I found using morebeer for my grains is the most economical solution. I dont really have a lhbs in my area so I cant buy bulk grains. In 10lb increments they ship free if $59 order is placed. Thats cheaper than most places I can buy a 50lb sack from. I can also get a variety every time I order. I dont buy anything else from them though. I also buy hops in bulk but not from them. All in all its a good company and have received my orders quickly.

Depends on your location. My "LHBS" is an hour away. Their prices are competitive, but my order arrives in two days. I'll pay a little bit more for consistent, fast shipping.

I try to support my LHBS's (yes, I live in the land of plenty - I could drive 30 miles and reach more than 10 LHBS's). That said, my main shop is hit and miss for having what I need, but I can get reasonable bulk grains, and it's great for a last minute "oops". The better stocked shop near me has way better variety, but customer service is not the best - I've had them make some really bad suggestions that were clearly sales motivated, and seen them with new brewers making the stupidist siggestions. The eben told me that I needed to rinse if using StarSan because it was not REALLY no rinse. My next fave LHBS has a 5% discount for AHA members, so I can go there and get a break IF they are cheaper. The rest are hit and miss. I REALLY like Brewmaster's Warehouse for being able to order EXACT amounts (4.6 oz of chocolate malt? no problem) and I've ordered from Austin Homebrew with good results. Bottom line is I try to support local, so I can always get good liquid yeast, but if the savings is 10% or more to go elsewhere, I will. I budget a fixed amount each month for brewing, and I have to make my dollahs stretch!

What you should be doing is growing all your own ingredients, like the rest of us do.

This is a dream! Well, vineyard is a dream, hops and wheat may be a reality in the next 3 years... But until then...
