Hey everyone

I am just about to start my second brew, but I am still learning about sanitizing. I am using Chemipro OX..I dont know if anyone of you is familiar with it or used it before. Apparently, it is a product that I can use and afterwards no rinsing is required. I just have to let the equipment dry a bit and that's it.

My question is the following: How much sanatizer do I need to sanitize a 5 gallon bucket (the same bucket that I use to sanitize my equipment too)? The instructions say 4gr/liter.....but do I need to feel the bucket up with hot water...or is it okay just to put like 4-5 liters and then sanitize the equipment in it...plus splash the water a bit around...so that it would touch the rest of the bucket up to the 5 gallon sign (thus sanitizing the bucket too)?

Thanks a lot and sorry for the relatively weird question. :)

I usually add enough water/sanitizer solution that I can dunk things that want to be dunked, cycle solution through the auto siphon, etc.... After that just work it around on the sides, making sure you hit everything. Consider having a sanitation bucket that isn't your fermenter. Once the wort goes in your fermentor you will want to have a way to sanitize anything that is going to contact the wort, even if you previously sanitized it. Sometimes things don't go according to plan and re-sanitizing is necessary.

I hear you. Very good idea. I kinda had the idea of using a glove on one hand, but I guess your idea is better. Things can always go wrong.

MI_Troll, one question....do you actually put every piece of equipment (such as the thermometer) into the liquid...once you have used it? I mean you use it, then put it back there again, and just go and get it out of the liquid when you wanna use it again...or simply you sanitize it once and then you use it without re-sanitizing while making the batch?

Usually once the chiller is running I give everything a StarSan bath before it goes in the wort. It has no adverse effects and in my mind once it has been in the wort it's ripe for harboring something. It may be overkill but it doesn't take anymore time and I'd rather be safe than sorry.
