A refractometer works well too.
 
What I mean is what do you use to get the beer out of the fermenter to put into the hydrometer?
 
Preferably a wine thief, but a turkey baster will work. Just make sure it is sanitized before taking samples.

i use my auto siphon with an adjustable crimp on the tubing to stop the flow. i just fill up a sample during the transfer to the primary. less stuff to sanitize/clean... win in my book. :mug:
