Hi everyone - I am a noobie first time brewer. I picked up a kit from a buddy that is moving out of town. It's a simple 2 carboy setup (glass 6.5 and 5 gallon containers). I brewed my first batch last thursday eve (didn't get to sealing it with yeast until about 2am...) and it is still fermenting pretty well (bubbles in the water every 9 seconds now). It's a Belgian Tripel (recipe and info here. A question I have - is what do a lot of people use to log their batches? I've seen the beer smith app - but i'll be damned - that is an intimidating app. I just used the style from howtobrew.com in the above example.

Regardless - I am already hooked and already wanting to brew a nut brown. I'm presuming that I have about 3-4 weeks before I am even ready to bottle. I may put it in the second carboy in a week or two to clean it out some - and finish fermenting with less yeast below. Then it'll be bottling time. The smells coming from the bubble water are out of this world and I cannot wait to have one and follow the RDWHAHB mantra. Just need my home brew first!!
 
Beersmith isn't intimidating! Get the 21 day trial, play around with it and see if you like it! I love mine and log everything in there...I also handwrite notes in a notebook just incase the old computer decides to hit the crapper one day.

As for secondary there are a lot of varying opinions...my .02 leave it in primary for 3-4 weeks, transfer to a bottling bucket add corn sugar and bottle!

I've read a lot of differing opinions on transferring from the primary. Part of the reason I want to do it is to ... well... just do it and understand getting it out and and seeing what the flow is like. I work best as a hands on by doing - and attempting to do as I have learned.
 
Welcome and congrats on your first brew. I just use the note pad app on the iPad to record the particulars and the dates. Keeping a log is a good thing if you want to reproduce a good batch.

I use BeerSmith to design the recipes, but I print them out for use on brew day, and store them in a duotang. I also keep a notebook where I keep notes of each brew (batch #, recipe, timing, anything unusual about the brew day, if I missed a temperature or was late with a hop addition, that sort of stuff, along with OG/FG measurements, a log of the dates for various steps, all the pertinent info).
