Currently making some wine. Started yesterday using a 64oz container of Welsh 100% Grape juice, 2 cups of sugar, and one packet of yeast. Also a balloon with holes poked on top for an air lock. The balloon was also taped down at the sides because I wasn't sure if it would inflate and perhaps fly off. Well a few hours after setting down my brew into the bottom of a closet, perhaps 5 hours, maybe 6, I was able to smell a faint wine smell only when I leaned into my brew to look at the bubbles and what not. Now, its been 23 hours of it brewing, and as soon as I opened up my closet a huge smell of wine hit me in the face. I can honestly say I'm really proud because it seems as if my first brew will be a huge success. I have a towel under my door that I previously had under there to keep what ever bugs may be in my closet from getting into my room, but after cleaning my closet a bit yesterday I realized there wasn't any bugs in there at all. But nevertheless, I left the towel. Now, i'm glad I left it because it really keeps the smell from entering into my room. Does anyone know how long the smell is supposed to last for? I plan on only letting it ferment for a week, then siphoning the juice into a container, bottling in a gallon jug or so, then capping it and placing it into the freezer.
I would like for it to not smell like crazy strong wine while its in the freezer a week for now, even if its capped up and what not. Is the smell supposed to go down after its siphoned and bottled or something? Thanks for the replies :)
