I scored a former keezer for free off of CL, and am wondering if I killed it in moving it back to my place. It spent a week upright after I picked it up before plugging it in, but it's not getting cold after being plugged in for periods as long as 24 hours.

A somewhat related question - how much does it matter if I plugged it in with an extension cord to test it? In my searching for info on chest freezers breaking, I noticed a number of people stating things like "using a non-appliance extension cord will kill your freezer".

As long as it's a medium or heavy duty extension cord I doubt that's an issue. It's best not to use one of those light duty extension cords that are about as hefty as a standard lamp cord.

The thing shouldn't take long to cool. Does it run continuously? If it's been more than a few hours and it has been running that whole time and doesn't feel cold inside...

I agree with previous posters. My wife and I just bought a chest freezer, and I had freezing temps within 12 hours of it being plugged in. On the upside, at least the freezer was free!
