there are no apparent line up marks and I twist and pull in tiny increments and no dice...any ideas?

It's a rubber coated keg. Look up miller/coors spear removal. It's a PITA to pull that spear. Since I was cutting the top off for a keggle anyway, I just rammed a 4' crowbar past the bearing. Added a little pressure and snapped that damn spear locking mechanism off. The spear pulls out after that. There are a few youtube videos on how to pull those spears.

You want to remove the keg spear I take it? We need a top view to see what type of keg coupler it takes.

The spear should unscrew until it's loose. Once loose, it still won't come out because of the internal catch. Place a dime on the ball of the spear, and then put a coupler on the spear. Engage the coupler fully and the catch should release allowing you to remove the whole assembly.

PKA sells a special tool for removing that type of spear, but they're kinda pricey, and they likely won't sell to entities other than breweries.

Coupler is what you normally connected to get the beer line connected to the keg?

1) was the keg and ball assembly still usable?
2) it's a pet peeve of mine when someone remark about a website or search, and doesn't prove a hyperlink. Considering the poster has already been to the place on the web that they are recommending. As a newbie I appreciate your help but had to vent...
3) I cut and pasted your search recommended text and came up with:https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=miller/coors+spear+removal&page=2
Nothing.

This 'ere fancy site even has a photo tutorial: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/miller-keg-spear-removal-375584/

Looks......messy. Good luck.

That tutorial will get the job done, but often ends up damaging the rubber seal around the ball. If you have a sankey coupler, the method I described above is easier and has much less risk of damaging the spear.
