Hi folks, I need some help with ways to mark Brewing hoses. I've got quite a set with some for mash in, mashing, boiling, and chilling steps. My system is a HERMS system with 2 pumps so lots of hose movements on brew day. I'd like to mark hoses in a permanent way so I can soak them, rinse them off etc. I've been scratching my head for ideas like gray tape with letters, colored zip ties, etc. I'd really like some custom labels that could have cryptic lettering say something like Mashing - Mash Tun outlet to HLT coil inlet and so on.

Has anyone solved this problem already and can share ideas? Maybe some leads on where to get hose id tags or labels made? I'm open to other ideas as well.....

This is about my last step in a 2 year brewery build and I'd like to finish strong here but am stumped. For reference here is my temporary solution with tags already about to fall off.

Umm, what? How does kettle etching get rid of transfer hoses?

Haha sorry man I just got excited with the etching thread and misread your post and thought the question was geared more to label plumbing ports. But anyway, if your hoses are such different lengths that you need a specific one for a specific task, then you have bigger problems..... Good luck.....

Yah my hoses are different lengths as my system is single tier plus I've got some dedicated to chilling step and want to sanitize these prior to use.

Can you post pics of your complete setup?

To help minimize mine, I made the outlets all female connections and the top male. When switching hoses, it is usually outlet for outlet and inlet for inlet. But I'm using cam locks.

Are you using all TC's?

What you could do is use grey Velcro straps and tighten them just to the point where they don't slide off your hoses.

I used these from lowes to keep all of my hoses bundled when I'm not using them. The Velcro is thin enough where I'm sure I could mark it with a sharpie.

Maybe just put a # or letter to represent what each hose is used for.

This way it's removable also.

Hi

First off, put a hose clamp around that one in the picture. :D

It is your brew rig. Acronymns that you remember is all that is needed. You're not mass producing your plumbing, you're making it work for you.

The tag idea is a good first fix but maybe in the long run considering moisture, spillls and such would fade or blur. I'd stick with the acronymns that even if only you know; you know what they mean.

I believe a fine point black sharpie on what I'm guessing are silicone tubes would hold up pretty well and if they started fading just redo them once in a while.

It's like me reading my notes.. nobody else could, but who cares - they're mine.

If you want to get fancy the only thing I can think of is find a guy with a wire segment marking machine.

Pretty sure somebody will come up with a much more reasonable answer than mine.

Good luck! Remember beer is made to be drunk or is it drinked, I think drunk. But most importantly homebrew is made from the brewer's love for it. :mug:

I've been tossing around the idea of making hose and valve tags out of aluminum and using the etching idea posted above. Stainless would be nice but Al would be easier to work with and you could get it from HD.

What about single wrap of colored electrical tape near each fitting, but on the tube? You would need multiple colors, but likely not more than a few.
