Is there a method, other than looking at pictures, of identifying what type of hops I have growing? I was given a rhizome with no real identification. We think it is cascade but are not certain.

Comparing the cone to pictures, making a tea with mature cones and tasting against known Cascade, and making a test brew are your best bets. (All require planting and getting some number of first year cones.)

I'd make a tea with a eighth or so oz of whole hop commercial cascade to a pint of 190 degree water, along with the same tea using your cones, and see if they taste the same. You could even make up a couple other teas from common hops to get a cross section.

I think the tasting option is the only real way of knowing; or find a hop expert!
Cheers
Jay
