HOP HEAD boil over!!!

Well, i think i enjoyed a few too many Southern Tier 2XIPA's last night as I brewed my first double IPA. I had two very small boilovers that resulted in a messy stove top (with which SWMBO is not very pleased). Other than the small boilovers, everything else went well. My OG is a little low (1.064) and i realize now that i should've not topped of with the full amount of water - lesson learned. I am hoping that since this is a big beer, that I will be able to avoid the watered down effect. Think its time to find a larger brew pot and move on to full boils in the garage. So, other than a lower ABV, what other problems can i expect from my small mishap?

I've had one boil over so far (just started brewing in November). It was a smoked brown ale kit from Midwest. Lucky for me, my SWMBO was out of town that weekend and didn't witness the mess. I ended up having to use more top-off water than normal, but that beer is my favorite so far out of the 8 I've brewed. It turned out awesome...the first kit I've brewed that I've seriously thought about brewing again to be sure I don't run out. Keep the faith...beer can overcome a few brewer mishaps here and there.

Awesome, thanks for the reassurance. How bad was your boilover? Also, was the abv affected very badly?

I've had a few boil overs and I think the worst that happened was having to clean the other burner deflectors and the underside of the stove top because it was that much that came out. Other than the little bit of sugars you lost, you're fine and it will be beer when it's done. The boil overs make me want to upgrade to a full boil also.

My ABV had been good every time after a boil over. I've been using extract and in a 5 gallon batch I use 6 or 7 lbs of it. I figure looking at the boil over mess after that I've lost less than 1/8th of a lb maybe in my extract so I don't think it's a big deal.

I tried to find pics of my first full boil which was also only my second batch. No luck unfortunately.

It was a Pliny kit and I had maybe a 1/4 inch head space in my pot. Needless to say it boiled over and not by a small amount. I thought my wife was gonna have a stroke lol. It was everywhere!

To make matters worse I tried to filter all those hops out with that big white plastic funnel with a strainer. Also no a good idea unless you have the patience of a Buddhist monk lol.

Everything still turned out great though. Beer tasted awesome. Don't fret. 99% of the time it'll make beer. 99% of the time it'll be delicious too.

Dry hopped with 2 oz of cascade today after 3.5 weeks of primary. Took a gravity reading and calculated my ABV. Came out around 5.54%. Recipe said it had "possible ABV of around 6.7%. Is this a function of the two small boilovers I had me hike brewing? To me, hat would make sense due to the lack of wort to be fermented. Thoughts?

Yeah it could be depending on your loss during the boil over but I'm no expert. I lost a little abv when I had a little boilover from a brew a few weeks ago
