I've always wondered if I should do this and whether or not it is good, bad, or neither. Do you guys pour the sludge, produced from proteins and pellet hops, at the bottom of the brew kettle into your fermentor? I've always done this, assuming I'll get something extra from the hops. What do you think?

I usually dump a bunch of it in. While pouring wort into the fermenter, though, it usually comes to a point where it's almost all "sludge." I often leave that in the kettle.

cool. Thought so. Always trying to fine tune my process. In the pursuit of perfection. You know how it is.

Cheers

yeah there's a lot of wort in that sludge, I try to avoid it but when I look at my primary being about a gallon shy then the sludge is going in. Trub is good for yeast and it will settle out.

I only hold back when it is really thick, but not usually more than a cup if that much. I don't do anything to make it settle in the kettle either.

I once tried to filter it, but the filter clogged almost instantly so I gave up on that.

I just brewed my first batch of beer Tuesday night. I filtered out the hops, but it was a pain in the a** and very messy as it keep clogging up the strainer. I'm thinking I will try skipping this step next time as I think I ended up losing more wort than was worth the effort . Oh well, live and learn....
