What you do in the privacy of your own home is none of their business.

This is not always true. I'm in an HOA neighborhood, and we had a problem with a neighbor raising a rooster. Not just against the HOA rules, but a violation of the county we are in. It really shouldn't be that hard to read the rules and decide if you can abide by them, but I guarantee most don't.

No, but... Stereotypically, the big issue with HOAs is leadership: power monkeys who self-righteously enjoy lording it over their neighbors.
