Home made hops

I have hop's growing and I want use them in a brew however I have been told that I should not use the first crop. Fact or fiction?

I got three flowers about the size of a large pea off of four plants last year. Pick away & use, should you be luckier. Just don't cut the vines down, they need to store energy for next year. Also, the AA content will probably be low, which isn't a problem for flavor or aroma hopping.
