I've never understood the romancing of the "dive bar". Why would you seek out a ****** place to be, BECAUSE of the shittyness.

Also, maybe I've just been in some ****** bars before, but I wouldn't consider Blackback to have been very divey any of the times I went there. I don't know, maybe I'm just operating under a different definition of dive bar than most.

and I used to skip the Res more times than not...

But their (Res) list is always pretty rad, plus it's cozier in the Winter than BB & Pig.
I've talked to a few restaurant owners who don't yet have HF on tap...and they stress out about it. Like if they could
just have Edward, they'd have a few more tables.
"We don't need HF, we have Idletyme IPA, it's better than Heady."
lulz

Listen I'm up there when it comes to being pompous and I definitely never considered Blackback divey either. Then again, I lived in a fraternity house in Newark on MLK boulevard for 3 years and didn't lose much sleep over it.

I have a great response to this but I don't feel like it. Tooooooo tired.

that's why I said "divey" and not calling it a straight "dive bar"... it's just some aspects... the darker, smaller quiet place.. just whiskey and beer joint with bars and no tables... it's definitely a different vibe... I think the new paint and lights take away from that...

Blackback was a lot like my favorite local joint... you just sit at the bar and shoot the **** with the bartender... really felt like the ambiance invited a lot more conversation

Res has gotten a lot better but it still has that feeling of being more for locals.... perhaps it's just me...

I haven't been since the switchover... what's the new bartender's take on Rick Moranis' career choices/trajectory? That'll make or break it for me.

Can someone help me out and let me know the cost and bottle limit per person was for Phenomenology?

Found an old Beerservedrare post -

  • Phenomenology of Spirit: Dark Farmstead ale. This version was cooled overnight, exposed to winer air, and 100% spontaneously fermented in oak barrels with Greensboro/Hill Farmstead airborne yeast. $15 per 375ml bottle, limit 4 per person

Yeah Blackback was basically Copper Mine in Vermont.

haven't spent enough time there since the switch.. need a night where it's just a couple of people in the bar to see if they embrace me or are horribly offended by us

Peaked w/ Louis Tully.

Then again, everybody in Ghostbusters peaked with their role in Ghostbusters (with the possible exception of Bill Murray).

Disclaimer: This is coming from someone who, as a kid, watched and rewound my Ghostbusters VHS so many times that the end of the movie started to get warped.

I've watched Ghostbusters so many times, and yet I always laugh at the line, "Yes it's true. ... This man has no dick."

Thanks for all the help on PoS. Need to track a bottle down one of these days

Wow 4 limit? I must have been out of town. I remember only being able to buy 1 bottle and then I traded for 2 more bottles over the last year. I don't think PoS is underrated but it's certainly one of the stand-out AWAs from 2013.

I've never had regular phenomenology.

PoS was released with GoM, both were limit 4. I remember it was right after the Madness 1/Civil 6 bottles sold out.

I had a bit of an off-putting experience at Res the only time I've been there, although not enough to keep me from going back. Bluecane and vonnegut21 can attest to this story. We started the night there and that was perfectly fine, had Abner and a bunch of other good things. Then we hit Blackback and Pro Pig, by then it was late and we went back to Resevoir because they were still serving food. Tried to order another Abner and the bartender wouldn't serve it to us and gave us a spiel about how he knew we had been drinking at a bunch of other places in between and how he'd get in trouble from the Vermont state liquor control authority (or whatever it is) if they found out blah blah blah because this was a high-ABV beer and we'd get drunk. But we were "allowed" to order glasses of Edward. Now, keep in mind this was a 10oz pour of Abner (8% ABV), and a 16oz pour of Edward (5% ABV). So basically, we were allowed to purchase the same total amount of actual alcohol despite the bartender's stupid song and dance about how he couldn't serve us Abner.

Anyone had one recently? Just remembered I have one stashed in my basement I forgot about after I moved earlier this year.

If anyone wants to let go of a bottle of PoS, let me know. I've got some HF, or can help you out on a future trip

Had one within the last month or two and it was amazing. Much better than fresh. I'm holding onto my last bottle for another 6-10 months and then opening it, can't wait.

All I know is that with all the time that Being and Time has been aging now, it could be really special if anyone (other than Shaun) ever gets the chance to drink it....

Not a dark saison/wild fan...drank my last PoS in the past 6 months and it was tasting great, much preferred it to CD4.

Ok so idk what to do. I'm coming up next month and planned on hitting the big 3. Pro Pig, Res, Blackback so should I stay away from Blackback?

Definitely still hit Blackback, I just wouldn't expect HFS to be on tap. However, the kitchen there is producing some excellent food, so definitely worth the stop!
