It was odd to be the first ones in line only getting there at 11:45. Super chill line, no limit on growler fills, and Norma and PoS on the shelf? The perfect HF trip.

EDIT: Other than the snow. I feel bad for the dude that got stuck on Taylor Rd and walked a mile+ to the brewery. Gotta respect his dedication though.

Hey! That was me! Lol. Thanks to Tate and Steve for giving me a ride back. Then I got cocky trying to back down the slope to a driveway to turn around on, and I slid right off the road! Then the guys drove me to Hardwick, where I then had to call my wife to make a deposit to our bank account back home, so I could renew my AAA Plus, and then make a call to get pulled out. All worth it though! Love how you can just renew AAA when you need them for something.

The next day I came around from the other side, much better in bad weather.

Haha, glad you eventually made it home safely. The best part for me was that after telling me and my buddy you walked all the way up there and your car was stuck, your first question wasn't if we could help you or give you a ride, it was "They still have Norma on the shelf?" That's a hardcore beer fan if I've ever met one.

Yeah, the walk was actually quite enjoyable. I was surprised my little prius had made the 7 hours drive in constant snow, glad I made it to a point that I could at least walk the rest of the way. I had like a dozen empty growlers I had to leave in the car, and it was the first time I've ever been there where there were no limits! I bought 8 new growlers that morning.

Were you in the group of guys that I met outside when I first walked up?

Yeah we were loading up the car as you walked up. It was kind of entertaining to see this figure emerging through the snow walking up the road.

A lil dramatic for my tastes, but a good read nonetheless. Thanks for posting.

"These beers aren’t a celebration of life as much as they’re a constant existential crisis from which Shaun himself is committed to emerging from whole."

i enjoyed that piece but the notion that an article with idyllic photographs and effusive prose can help erode the "damage" done by other articles.... with idyllic photographs and effusive prose is pretty funny.

the title is "sisyphus sits upon his rock" for chrissakes

Is anyone else LOVING the Motueka pale as much as me?

Almost 100% on this being my favorite single hop pale. I loved it last time around and was hoping we'd see it again :D
Send me a growler and I'll let you know how much I love it. Haven't had that one yet.

Would blurry cameraphone pictures have helped get the point across?

I don't think this was meant to "erode damage done by other articles" (serious question - could you cite one that did damage? I would honestly like to read it). I think it was the first one that hit the nail on the head about motivations, understanding, context, and looking beyond what every other person has reiterated dozens of times in generic articles/blog posts. Was it wordy and elaborate? Yes. Disclaimer - I appreciate that in what I read, so I didn't find it off-putting. I can understand how some may feel that (see dramatic above), but if that's the biggest takeaway from the article then I think the point was missed.

No, actually. One of my less favorite single hop pales. I think it was well done, I just don't like the characteristics of that hop, I think. I'm still waiting for Shaun to do a Galaxy pale instead of a DIPA :p

I sucked a 2L growler down the other night... fantastic. Not one of my favorite hops generally, but beautifully expressed in that beer. One of my favorite single hop pales HF has done.

Yeah i agree also, it's very well done, but i'm not a huge fan of the hop. I liked Riwaka more if we are going NZ hops.

What other beers are out there using Motueka? I think the only one I've had is this one. I wouldnt mind finding some others to see if I'm just a huge fan of that variety or if this beer is just amazing

probably both, tbh

A lot of Cellarmaker's beers use Motueka, though they haven't done any Motueka-only beers. I'm pretty sure there's a decent amount in Drake's Aroma Prieta, too. Someone in the Bay Area could get you some in season, at any rate.

I think SN Southern Hemisphere harvest has Motueka, but that's the only other beer I can remember that uses them, and they're wet then anyway.

Aroma Prieta, Spice of Life Motueka, and Brew Dog Motueka single hop IPA. And I've had 3 different Motueka single hop IPAs from homebrewers. The homebrews were great beers but I wasn't a fan of the hop character. Leave it to HF to make something absolutely fantastic and cause me to reconsider....

Night Shift made Motuekanation, but it's a belgian style. And not so good.

youre misconstruing me (and seem to be attributing negativity to my post where there is none - im a huge hf fan, its my favorite brewery).

my point is that clearly shaun is uncomfortable with being cast alongside the ranks of instagram filtered *********s like the mast brothers and other "artisan" hipster entrepreneurs who marry heavily manufactured (and quite irritating) pr strategies with the fact that they make good, "hand-hewn" (insert trendy, tumblr keyword adjective here) products.

the article above does well to point this out on the one hand, but is ironic in that it also serves only to perpetuate the mythmaking of the brand- quite effectively even. at this point shaun may well be stuck with the image thats been constructed for him, but kudos to him for trying to buck it when he can.

There's a new brewery in Brooklyn called Other Half making a Motueka Pale Ale. Very enjoyable beer

Sounds like I misunderstood some of your intent (and so, my apologies), but some was what I thought. I think the article (pictures and phrasing included) are a strong departure from the normal jargon. They are not an embellishment of how mystical the place is - they acknowledge but speak to deeper issues. It's not some over-glorification of someone who can do no wrong - it's a commentary on the strive for perfection (which inherently carries an acknowledgement of shortcomings).

Honest question, no snark with it - if there were no pictures and the language were dumbed down, would the message not still be just as poignant?

as a writer myself, my only response is that we neednt really imagine such a scenario because the copy and images as they are presented quite literally are the article and what weve been given to assess and consider
