Hey I'm new just ordered my kit from northern brewer.
Wondering about some stuff.
Whats a good recipe to start out with or it doesn't matter since they are all about the same by difficulty?
Whats a good store to get supplies for brewing hopefully in the east coast so the shipping is faster :)

Welcome.

Brew anything that is not a lager. Darker ales are more forgiving. Brew something you like.

Southeast or Northeast?

im located north east
Not exactly looking for a real store since i looked for one and there isnt one ina drivable range from me
but a good site with appropriate prices would be nice

Im thinking of doing this one anyone tried it and has any advice?

"A fantastic extract brew with an all-grain taste. Perfect hop/malt balance on the palate with tremendous hop aroma. Definite German tones."

Ingredients:

1 lb. light dry malt extract
1 lb. dark crystal malt, 60° Lovibond
1 oz. Northern Brewer hop pellets (8.4% alpha acid), for 60 min.
1.75 oz. German Hallertauer hop pellets (3.5% alpha acid), 1 oz. for 15 min., 0.75 oz. for 1 min.
1/2 tsp. Irish moss
Wyeast 1007 (German ale yeast)
1 cup light dry malt extract for priming

Step by Step:

Add crushed grain to 2.5 gals. cold water and bring to a boil. Remove grains and add malt extract (both syrup and dried). Bring to a boil, and add Northern Brewer hops. Boil 45 minutes. Add 1 oz Hallertauer hops and Irish moss and boil 15 minutes more. Total boil is 60 minutes. Add 0.75 Hallertauer hops at cool down. Top off to 5 gals. and pitch yeast. Primary ferment at 70° F for four to five days. Rack to secondary. Bottle when fermentation is complete.

OG = 1.050
FG = 1.010.

edit i was looking for ingredients but i cant find them any idea where to look for?

That recipe looks good. My suggestion for the first batch is always to do a beer that will be ready quickly. Fast turnover = positive reinforcement. Looks like this recipe will be fast and tasty - perfect!

""any idea where i could find this?
6.6 lbs. Ireks unhopped amber extract"""

Yeah, the amber extract is LME (liquid malt extract) which looks like a syrup. Your recipe also calls from DME (dry malt extract) which comes in a powder form. And the dark crystal malt is the grain that will be steeped.

If you still have any reservations about the recipe, you can always order an ingrediant kit from either Norther Brewer or Austin Home Brew. These will come with all the ingrediants you will need and detailed instructions to go with them. Once you see how the process works you will feel much more confident about putting a recipe together on your own.

should i get the dark crystal malt crushed or non crushed? (i dont have any special item to crush it)

well here is my ordering list tell me if i missed anything or if u see a mistake
2532 Amber Unhopped John Bull Syrup 3.3# $9.95 $19.90
20111 Briess Golden Light DME 1# $3.95 $3.95
G506C Simpsons Dark Crystal CRUSHED $1.60 $1.60
HP29 N. Brewer Pellets 1 oz. $1.40 $1.40
HP07 Hallertau Pellets 1 oz. $1.50 $3.00
9006 Irish Moss 1 oz. $1.25 $1.25
Y1007 Wyeast German Ale $5.75 $5.75

The grains need to be crushed when you steep them. Buy them pre crushed as long as you think you will brew up the kit with in a couple of weeks. The grains keep better if they are not crushed. So, if you wanted to stock up on ingredients for later use, you would want to buy them not crushed and then crush them your self when you get around to brewing.

Side note: I've crushed grain using a rolling pin while the grains are in a large sturdy bag - not fun! Try to get them pre crushed if at all possible.
