Hero: The Life and Legend of Lawrence of Arabia

Just finished reading Hero, a biography of T.E. Lawrence. Based on the recommendation of a friend and I'm glad I picked it up, it is a captivating story.

I do dig biographies, of heros or otherwise.

Does 'not capable' mean incapacitated? Do we need to alert the authorities?

My favorite biography (well, 75% biography 25% fiction) is Roughing It, by Mark Twain. It's a collection of stories and travels from the earlier parts of his life. As with most of his writing, it's captivating and very funny.

Some books I read that I highly recommend:

• Skeletons of the Zahara (similar to what you just read)
• In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex
• West with the Night

and, by far the greatest true-to-life story ever told:

Endurance: Sir Edmund Shackleton If you get this one, I highly suggest you get the version with the pics inside. Illuminating.

The story of the Shackleton expedition is extraordinary/horrific, that's a good suggestion, thanks!

I haven't read any Twain in years, since reading Huck Finn at bedtime to my boys. Great suggestion.

Some good recommendations. When I get done with The Wheel of Time series, I'll have to remember to pick up a couple of these.

Well in that year Dr Zhivago got robbed. While Lawrence of Arabia was a good movie, it was not as good as Dr Zhivago. My vote for that time period would be Pasternak, Dr Zhivago. For a must read I would also recomend anything Tolstoy or Dostoevsky, or Chompsky, Hegemony or Survival. They are not light reads though, but very interesting.

Zulu is another with violent historical significance.
