I'm starting to work on a herms design. My plan is to have a non dedicated herms HLT. Meaning I be transferring the recirculated wort through the top of the pot for both the intake and outtake. Right now I picture the intake going to the bottom of the kettle and have the outage going up and out of the spiraled coil. Should I be worried about part of the herms coil touching the bottom of the pot (gas heated)? If so, any suggestions to keep it off the bottom?

Before I mounted my coil I just let it hang off the side of the kettle. I'd be a little cautious of it sitting on the bottom of the kettle. You could have a really large hot spot that could denature your enzymes.

Not sure contact would be all that big a issue. There'd only be the thinnest line imaginable of actual contact for only a portion of the bottom loop, and the rest of the hex would be surrounded by tempering fluid.

Unless the flow was stopped for a prolonged period for some reason I don't think there'd be a deleterious effect...

Cheers!
