Looking to culture/save yeast and do basic yeast lab work. I found a Swift M3200 microscope that goes to 1000x at a good price and now want to get a hemacytometer.

Any comments on light/bright field versus dark field? Hausser Scientific recommended dark field for beer yeast.

Also any comments on price/source. Hausser's are $250+. Cynmar has either one for about $60 from a German manufacture. I have also seen bright field ones on ebay for as cheap as $25 from China. All have same specs in print: Neubauer-improved grid, optical glass, etc.

Cynmar seems a safe choice as they say their's is good quality at very reasonable price. Plus I need to buy other lab supplies and they have most at good prices. Main question would be light versus dark field.

Thanks,

I bought 5 of them for my biology classes on Ebay. I think I paid $15 each. They work just fine.

I've always used Neubauer-improved. Unless you are doing counts all day long, I'd go with the inexpensive alternative.

Bright field works fine for yeast. Of course, if you're set up for it dark field is better.
