I am 2 1/2 months into making edwort's apfelwein. However, I just noticed that there is some brown sediment in the airlock. Is this something I need to worry about, should I clean out the airlock, etc?

Shouldn't be a big deal as long as you have sanitizer or vodka in the airlock. It won't hurt anything. If it bugs you then it won't harm to clean it if you sanitize properly
