Okay...

So, my ale has been in the primary for 11 days now, 8 with the airlock. There has seemed to be no bubbly activity with the airlock for probably 5-6 days now. I decided to take a hydrometer reading tonight and I have a couple of questions...

When I took the rubber lid off there the top of the carboy was full with sediment. So I pushed the thief through the sediment and most of it fell into the beer. Is this okay? (I probably should have asked before I did that...Hah!)

Secondly, the hydrometer reading was at about 1.011-1.013. I can wait longer before bottling...in fact...my plan was to wait until Monday, transfer to a secondary. Then, wait another week, and then bottle.

What do you think I should do?? Is my beer ruined because I pushed some sediment down into the carboy to get a reading?

try not to double post... it bothers some here. Beginning brewer forum is the best place for these types of posts... you'll get answer quicker there (see my post) This is the most active homebrew site out there (not like some others that you have to beg for help).

You'll generally get the help you need VERY QUICKLY, if your question is in the right place.
Welcome!

Thanks...I was just worried and wanted some feedback before the night was over...

And sorry for the double post...won't make a habit of it.

No Prob! Let's just say other newbs have gotten beaten up over it! LOL (in a cyber way) NO worries! Looks like you got your answers in the beginners forum... We're glad to help! A lot of us who have a good amount of brewing experience watch that forum for questions just like that.

I wish a place like this was around in the early 90's when I got started~ would have saved myself many headaches & worries! Feel free to post often there... answers usually come quickly. As you advance your questions will become more specific, and the areas become more defined. sometimes if you don't get your answer in a few days it may become obvious that it may be the wrong place or you just have a weird question, that most don't have the answer to... then try another forum. Most here are willing to share and feel the same way I do... wishing it was here earlier in our brewing obsession!

Like I do for others, feel free to PM me. I'm a premium member and have unlimited PMs... this site it worth it's weight in gold, and like I did, you will probably find it's worth the cost to keep it around (it's much cheaper than a few other pay sites and much more active than any other site out there). No I don't have a $ interst in this site and I'm not a moderator... Just a very happy brewer and want this to grow even bigger.

Another site that has helped me as a brewer is tastybrew.com esp their calculator section! I'm no math wiz (I'm an artist making a living as a graphic designer) and math is NOT my thing... but http://www.tastybrew.com/calculators/ is a God send! I'm on a mac, and not done setting up a good all grain system. Once that is done I may subscribe to a better beer calculator with some extra perks. But so far this has served me well, and it has improved, however their message board is weak and May have had to tripple post to get just a few answers, and it would have taken days.

There are many more recipes here under the recipe section in the top nav too... Happy Brewing!
