So I decided that I wanted to try to brew a Black IPA so I went to my local homebrew store where I knew they had a kit to get one to do this past weekend. Well I was in a rush and the gentleman working there obviously doesn't know that there is a such thing as a black IPA ...
He wa like sure I can put together a kit for you...and I repeated said BLACK IPA and he was like "sure, sure" ... and I was in a rush because there was a snow storm on the way in to the area

well long story short he put together a Regular IPA kit for me (which I noticed after opening the box and looking at the contents) as follows:

6.6lbs - Amber Liquid Extract
1 lb - 60L Caramel/Crystal MAlt
0.5 lb - Roasted Barley
1.5 oz - Northern Brewer Hops
0.75 oz - Cascade Hops

What should I add to get the Black IPA I want ot should I just do the IPA ?

Well, Between the amber extract, crystal, and .5lb of roasted barley, that should get you pretty close to a black IPA color-wise. That recipe seems to be severely lacking in hops for an IPA however.

two comments.

1) if you are shooting for style accuracy, then I don't know if this will hit it at all. the black IPAs are supposed to be black in color (which you will get), but not really exhibit roasted grain flavors. (Theoretically, you should not be able to tell it apart from a regular IPA if you had your eyes closed). The half pound of roasted barley is going to lend flavor for sure.

2) +1 to what jjp36 said. There is not nearly enough hops in there for this to even be an IPA.

I wouldn't call this recipe a black IPA at all.

That doesn't look like a regular IPA kit either. Porter maybe?

The signature malt for black IPAs is Carafa III. I use half a pound per 5 gallon batch, as well as one pound Caramel 60. The idea is to get the color and a slight bit of roastiness without overwhelming the hops. Some people substitute a mix of roasted barley and chocolate malt but I find this tips too far to the malty side and ends up being more of a hoppy porter.

I would also significantly boost the hops. Bitter with a high-alpha like magnum or simcoe and finish with mid-alpha hops like amarillo. Ditch the amber extract, too, in favor of light or ultralight - the specialty malts give enough color for this style.

Here is a reciepe for a Black IPA:
7lbs Light Dry Extract
.75lbs Carafa 1
1/2 lb Crystal 55
1/4 lb Melanodin( Victory)
1 oz Columbus 60 mins
1 0z Cascade 45 mins
1 oz Cascade 30 mins
1 oz Amarillo 5 mins

1 tsp Irish Moss 15 mins

This should give you an idea to base off of.
