This is a 3 year old cascade, i am going to replant it and want to know if i can cut it into 3 pieces and let do it's thing. Can i just cut it up or is there a certain way to go about doing this? Do i need to take any of the long roots with each cutting? I don't want to kill it, sorry im NO gardener and would really appreciate some helpful advice on this. I have 4 others that need the same job done on them, cheers!

I live in New Zealand, so not hop growing season yet:D

Based on my gardening experience, you follow the top of the plant where the shoots are down through the middle of the rhizome and into the roots. As long as you can keep that connection from root to shoot, than you should be okay breaking or cutting to split the plant up. Maybe you can gently brush away a little more dirt and figure out what roots belong to what shoots. I am also planning to do this with my hops for the first time soon. Please let me know How you worked it out.

You look to be in real good shape as it looks like you've got about 5 giant 'vertical' rhizomes (for lack of a better word). I would just cut straight down the middle of the crown with a pruning saw (or in thirds), however you want. The big advantage you have is that it looks like you can keep some roots in tact for each piece when you cut. This will help your transplants to a head start as they'll already have some mature roots to get going. Have at it!

Pissy, How did you get your hands on rhizomes in the first place? I thought they were very tightly controlled for disease/pest control on your island.

i was gifted a couple of vine cuttings and grew them from those, sat them in some water bottles in the sun and most of them sprouted roots.

Yes there are not many types we can get our hands on here, mostly wild hops.
