So I'm making Midwest Superior Strong Ale OG 1.063-1.067. I thought I ordered a wyeast activator smack pack, but they've sent me a Wyeast Propagator smack pack and 6 grams of Muntons dry yeast.

Stupid me, I did not realize it was a propagator pack and I'm in the middle of my boil without having made a starter.

I don't have an opportunity to refrigerate my wort, goto the lhbs to buy some DME, and make a starter tonight to pitch tomorrow.

Can I pitch the propagator back directly into the wort with the 6 grams of dry yeast dissolved into 1/3 cup of water????

I need help fast.

Thanks so much!

It probably won't hurt, but the dry yeast will probably do most of the work. The number of cells in a propagator pack is WAY less than the number of cells in a pack of dry yeast.

I usually use the 11.5g pack of dry yeast, so you might be under pitching even with both of your yeasts. But as many wiser contributors to this forum have told me, it will probably turn out fine.

Thanks so much for the reply. I ended up using both yeasts. I'm going to watch the gravity closely...if it stalls I'll be sure to pitch either another pack of dry yeast or a wyeast activator asap. Wish me luck...its my first bigger beer.

I think you'll be ok. I'd expect a good lag period, but I really doubt you'll have a stuck ferementation or an abnormally high FG.
BYO had an interesting experiment this month in conjunction with basicbrewing.com and they found that even pitching at 1/4 the normal pitch rate, the beers still finished and we're bad at all. Some had higher esters or a cidery flavor, but none were bad or undrinkable.

That's good to know. My OG was 1.068...definitely the biggest beer I've made yet, but will hopefully be delicious once its done.

Next time I'll absolutely make a starter.
