I found this thread on accident, and I'm really glad I did.
I just picked up my equipment today. $200 and 2 hours later and my first brew is fermenting. The airlock is even bubbling!
I went with the Brewers Best Holiday ale hoping it would be ready in time for Xmas, but I'm not so sure given what Ive been reading. I was under the impression that it took a month total for a beer to mature typically. Oh well, push comes to shove I can tell family and friends to let it condition more before enjoying.
This has all been very exciting and I cant wait to learn more about this wonderful hobby, and hopefully share recipes down the road.
