Evening all and warm wishes from (for the majority of you) across the pond in Blighty!

After lots of humming and hawing I decided to give the homebrew a shot (mostly because I'm broke, a little bit because I'm a chemist).
Going to fess up to a heresy right from the get go. My first batch, will be a kit beer a Hamilton Bard Old English to be exact. Just want to minimise the chances of things going wrong with the first batch, get my feet wet as it were.

Originally started to look at wine (which I'm carrying on with) but found this forum whilst looking up the wine and, well, you guys got me converted.

As I mentioned I work for a chemical company over here, so I've pressed some of our gear into service (containers, chemicals, etc) don't worry though, they're all very pure and all cleaned very well. In fact, every container I'm using is certified for chemical transport so there should be no seepage of chemicals from the plastic. Going to start small (25L/80 pints), since it would be a bit of a hassle getting one of the 1 tonne containers up the stairs to my flat :drunk:

I plan on bottling to start with, because I've been gifted the capper and I live above a pub so have a ready supply of those Magners 1 Pint cider bottles. Of course I'll do my part to ensure I have a good supply :mug:

Sorry for the long winded into, but I thought I'd get the majority out of the way here!

You live above a pub? I think I would have died of happiness years ago if I did!

Welcome to HBT! :mug: And there's absolutely nothing wrong starting with (and even sticking to) kit beers, don't let anyone tell you any different!

Nice to "meet" you! We've been to Scotland twice, and just LOVE it! Haven't made it to Aberdeen yet, though :)

Your not missing much to be brutally honest, althoughthey do have a REALLY nice maritime museum which would be worth visiting.
Edinburgh is the place to go if your a beer fan. Heriot-Watt Uni (my old home from home) does a brewing and distilling course and a fantastic beer festival.
Actually, thats why I got into Beers in the first place. During the final year of the course you get a work placement, and my flatmates friend got sent to the Caledonian Brewery. We wound up getting a tour (and stinking of hops). Needless to say we were given MANY samples of their various brews. (The tour went on a kind of cloverleaf pattern, where the brewery pub was in the middle, at the end of each lead, back to the pub). Needless to say, we wern't a pretty sight by the end. Got a fine taste for heavy ale after that though :)

Welcome to the boards! You will find everything you could possibly imagine about brewing beer and wine here. Haven't been to Scotland yet, but that's where half of my family hails from. Hopefully will be getting out there within the next few years. Best of luck in your future brewing endeavors!

Welcome to ya!

I've always wanted to visit Scotland. Mostly because it is the opposite of where I live now,as far as the weather.

Halfway through reading your post I realized I was reading it in a scottish accent. Lol

A very good idea. If after a couple kits you're happy with the results, branch out.

People think of the Pacific Northwest as cold, cloudy and rainy. True 9 months of the year. Right now it's 92F, bone dry and blazing sun. As we call it: hop-growing weather.

Thanks for all the welcomes! I'm practically vibrating with anticipation of my beer kit! Already making plans for what to do with my second brew! Oh the an-ti-ci-pation!

welcome bro from across the irish sea, aye whuts tha craic wi ya?? A hae a brave drooth on me! beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer

I too have always wanted to visit Scotland... and I was reading with a Scottish accent!

Welcome to HBT (from another noob)! You must share some pics of your setup when you get going... I am intrigued. :mug:
