... and probably the biggest newb to sign up here. I'm so anxious to get into homebrewing, but I don't know jack. So I'm doing all the reading I can and trying to hold back my trigger finger until I know what I need.

I'm from a state where we have a pretty weak beer selection thanks to our 6% cap. Also, homebrewing is illegal. Oh well.

I've been known to dive deep into my hobbies. I'm an avid cigar smoker and have the same handle across many cigar forums. I also dive and play music (drums mainly). I can definately see myself falling in love with this as well.

Before I forget, my name is Chris and I just turned 24. I build furniture in a factory for a living (for now).

Guess that about sums me up. I'll be doing a lot of reading and trying not to ask too many questions as I'm sure they've been asked 1,000 times.

Great to have you Chris!
I also live in MS and am new to the forum as well. There is a WEALTH of information here. Dive in and enjoy!
I feel your pain on the beer selection. I spend some of my lunch breaks in Memphis, where I can get a respectable selection.

Ah, you must be fairly close. I live just outside of Tupelo. I like Buster's and the Flying Saucer in Memphis. Usually go up there to smoke and drink with some buddies.

Ever been to Mid South Malts up there? Thought about checking it out this weekend.

Indeed. I think I have been there once a week over the past month. MidSouth Malts does a great job. I still do a lot of mail order myself but I would recommend swinging by to say hello. It isn't much to look at really... but if you are in need of something they will usually be able to help you out. Also, their hours are a little off. During the week they open around 3:00... not too sure about the weekend. Just don't want you to make the trip and end up looking through the glass.
I've actually been in that store (expecting to blow a good wad of cash), talked out of my purchase (spending a lot less money), and walked away with a better alternative with most of my cash in my pocket.
If you ever have the chance to stop by Natalie's Liquor in Cordova (on Germantown Rd.) don't pass it up. They have the BEST big beer selection in town. Also, not to be overlooked, the "Z" Mart on Highland (behind Whatever) has an amazing selection of < 6% beer... and that is about 2 minutes from Busters.

Hey Chris,

Welcome to the forum. Being from Alabama, new to homebrewing, and an avid cigar smoker; we share some things in common. I wish you the best of luck- this is a great place.

hello,

Just curious, so is this homebrewing ban enforced, or just something that they didn't get around to taking off the books? As I may be in Hattiesburgh MS for a few years (University there) this could be a big problem. I take it there are no homebrew stores?

Never heard of anyone being busted before. There are groups of public homebrewers. I wouldn't see a problem as long as the police don't raid your house for any reason. I'm not sweatin' over it.

And no, probably no homebrew shops. :(

Hey guys,
My name is Luke, I live in Brandon, MS and I've been a homebrewer for almost 2 years. I'm also the Brewer's Advocate for the homebrew club that has recently formed in the central Mississippi area. The name of the club is Homebrewer's Association of Middle Mississippi aka HAMM. We meet the third Thursday of every month at the Mellow Mushroom off Lakeland Dr. We are still working on our site, but y'all are welcome to join us on our google group.
