Hey guys I'm a newbie here...today I picked up a brewing kit and and ingredients kit from brewer's best. My first brew is going to be English Brown Ale...after that I'm gonna try some IPA's...(my favorite style beer)...I'm excited to start. Anyway I'm a student at the University of Tennessee and I hope to learn a bit from everyone on this site....

Welcome aboard and Roll Tide! ;)

This place is a treasure-trove of info, have fun.

Phillip

I'm going to ignore that last post.

Knoxville will always be "home" for me, and I also attended the real UT (some people here in Texas are confused).

Welcome and GO VOLS!

Welcome to the board! Brother-in-law flunked out of UT a couple of years ago. How the heck do you do that at UT? MTSU alum here, go Blue Raiders!

Greetings from Sparta!
Why thank you.

:mug: back at you

Go vols...got a great basketball game tomorrow against UK. Hope we play well.

I wish I knew how you could do that. When you are going to school to do something that you love it makes it even harder to flunk out...But on a whole, I'd say UT is a fairly easy college...I have many friends that go to mtsu and others that just live in the boro...I'm from south of franklin from a small town called Columbia...It's mule capitol of the world....

Anyways guys thanks for welcoming me here...glad to be here...can't wait to bottle up my first brews in about a week or so...

I lived and worked in Columbia for a year. Parks department there is really disfunctional to say the least.

I'll have to second the big Roll Tide from my brewer brethren from Oprah land. I'm from there, so I come by it honestly. Wife and Bro in law are UT grads though so I'm surrounded.

We'll have to arrange a swap to sample wares. I have an AG IPA just finishing fermenting right now. Unfortunately I've been inactive for awhile so my stocks are down but I went to Ferment Station the other day and he had a lot better hop selection than before so i'm cranking it up. I'm even considering putting a hop vine or two in the back yard. I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have as well.

Regards,
Alan

Where were you planning on getting your rhizomes from to plant? I actually found out that we have some hops selections on UT's campus and I'm going to see if my plant propagation teacher will let me take some cuttings. Not sure of the variety but I'm sure in a few years it will make some darn fine hops regardless. Like they always say, nothing is better than homegrown (or homebrewed for that matter). Fermentation Station is my choice even though alan biermaken's is closer to my apartment. I work at the walgreen pharmacy closest to fermentations. Much cleaner than alan's I must say. I was impressed the first time I went in. Also the prices are much cheaper.

I'm planning on doing a partial mash Sweetwater IPA clone within a week. Hope it turns out great. My English Brown Ale will be bottled on Friday hopefully. This will only be one week and 1 day of fermentation but it shouldnt be too aweful. I need to free up the primary for this next batch. I may buy a carboy so that I have more flexibility with multiple batches. However my tiny apartment will be packed to the max with "stuff". Can't wait to be in a house.

Welcome! I just donated my bottle collection to a new-to-brewing brewer that was living in the fort, any chance that was you?

As far as LHBS go, I prefer Fermentation Station simply because they will crush your grains for you. However, if you are just doing extracts Allan's is just as good price wise.

Let me know if you want to do a combined brew session!

Ps, craigslist has a posting for two 5 gal carboys..

That was not me who recieved the bottles but that is quite a coincidence. Thanks for the heads up on craigslist. I'll check it out later tonight and cross my fingers that they are still available. Once I get a few brews under my belt Id be glad to combine with you. I'm also trying to get some coworkers to start brewing also. Hopefully I'll recruit a few extra members to the boards

I haven't gotten that far with the concept of growing hops yet but you can find them easy enough on line. Ask the prof if he knows what type the hops are as some hops are not suitable to brew with. Another problem is knowing the AA content but maybe you could bribe a botany/Horticulture major to analyze it for you.

I'm surprised there is not some sort of HB club in Knoxville. Every time i've been in Ferment station, there are people in there. I haven't been to Allan Biermakens but was told he did not have much.

Would love to organize a swap program to sample other brewers wares. Unfortunately the only thing I have left in bottles is something I would not give away because frankly its not very good. This will soon be rectified though as I have an IPA in the hopper and several more planned.

If any of you let this sickness lead you into doing all grain I'd be happy to help you out with it. I had to learn by trial and error and it would have been much easier to watch someone else to learn.

Alan

Well I am a horticulture student and I do not think we really have the ability to analyze the AA levels in the hops...atleast not on the agriculture campus (maybe i can get in touch with my old botany TA tho)...I will ask what variety the hops are the next opportunity i get. There is actually a knoxville meetup group for homebrewers which is similar to a homebrewing club. Check them out on meetup.com Once i get serious a few under my belt I will be glad to brew with others in the area. I may stick with partial mash for the next few batches but then after that I will try an all grain. I'll try to keep in touch with fellow knoxvillians (?) on HBT and hopefully by the time summer rolls around we can all do a group brew perhaps or even some swapping of brews.
